At The Brides’ Project, we know the wedding industry can be intimidating to consumers: with so many vendors, styles, and price points, where on earth do you begin to sift through them all?
How about right here! We’re a volunteer-run organization and a good place to start because we only give our opinion if you ask, and nobody paid us for it. We don’t buy our inventory, it is donated, so we see a LOT of dresses. And it goes without saying, we see and hear about a lot of vendors, too. Many brides who shop with us find their other wedding vendors through us, and/or give us feedback about their vendors.
We’d like to make wedding planning easier for you by referring vendors who we’ve worked with and share in our mission of social enterprise by supporting cancer agencies. If you decide to use any of these services, let them know that The Brides’ Project sent you!
The Canadian Cancer Society
One GREAT option is to offer a donation in lieu of a small gift that is often eaten, thrown away or forgotten (no offense meant, but that’s what happens with most bonbonierres!). A great way to say “Thank You” is to join someone like The Breast Cancer Foundation or The Canadian Cancer Society with their programmes! Both have great opportunities to offer donations to make your wedding day a lasting difference in the life of others.
In this section of the website, we look for vendors who exemplify quality, reasonable pricing, reliability and are nice too… Here are just a few of the cake folks who I have heard wonderful things about:
The Marmalade Cake Company
Anastasia Malloy (Toronto, GTA)
Helen Shroyer (Belleville, Kingston area)

- Gown Alterations & Cleaning
Grace Wedding Gown Specialists
Grace and her team in Scarborough are absolutely phenomenal. Grace is extremely knowledgeable about the cleaning needs of wedding gowns, and recently came to TBP to take a look at what we have on the rack. She assured me that there is NOTHING on the rack that won’t come perfectly clean using the techniques available. She will also tackle silk, and took a gown we had with candle wax dripped on the skirt, and rendered it perfectly SPOTLESS! Cleaning prices vary from about $70-$120 depending on the complexity of the gown, and as I’m sure you all know, that is EXTREMELY reasonable. TBP clients are also offered a further $10 discount from these amazing prices!!! WOOT!
Grace is located at 3678 St. Clair Ave E, and you can reach her at 416-261-2204 if you have any questions at all about your gown cleaning needs. You can also visit their website by clicking here.

Val’s Bridal Cleaning Service
Val has been cleaning bridal gowns by hand for the last 10 years, and is the infamous founder of “Play it Again Val’s” in Ajax. She has extensive experience given her own previous gown resale business. She charges an extremely reasonable $99.00 to clean synthetic gowns. You can discuss wiser alternatives with Val should you choose to keep your dress… she can tell you how to keep it beautiful for years to come. Finally, after meeting Val and discussing gown cleaning… she amazed me with one account of her experiences. She acquired gowns with black spray paint on them… and GOT IT ALL OUT! We both agreed that there is really very little that can’t be removed, so your gown will be in expert hands.

String Quartet (or Duo/Trio)
I met the lovely Jennifer Moersch at a wedding in January 2008, and I was sure I’d conducted a wedding where she was providing the music before… and have since enjoyed their music-making several times.
Jennifer and her colleagues make up the Feu Noire String Quartet, and their music is fantastic!

Okay, so you’ve got the venue, you’ve picked your flowers, you’ve got the dress and accessories…
… you’ve gone for tastings of hors d’oevres, cakes and everything in-between to the point of wondering if the dress will fit…
… you’ve got a limo that looks like a bus on wheels complete with flashing neon signs and champagne on tap…
… you’ve detailed every possible combination of family members in terms of ‘must-have’ pics for your photographer, and had too much wine while doing so and have requested strange poses that are physically impossible… (reminding you of TWISTER)
OH, and you’ve got the man/woman to marry as well! Mustn’t forget that …
But something is missing. Egads… got the list, checked it twice… checked again…
Okay, okay… I’ll look for divine inspiration… and this should give you a clue!
THE OFFICIANT! Someone to legally marry you on the big day in the event that you’re not having a church/synagogue/mosque wedding.
<sniff, sniff> Why do couples forget about us and how we can make your day! After all, these guests are coming for a reason… the marriage, not just the food and the open bar!
Your ceremony does not have to be boring, formal, long or remind you of Charlie Brown’s teacher droning on and on… quite the opposite. Your ceremony should be a great reflection of you two as a couple, and the values you share. It can easily set the mood for the day, whether light and celebratory or more serious. It’s up to you. So is the content, aside from a few legal requirements.
Helen Sweet is a licensed officiant who has performed oodles of marriage ceremonies of every kind – including same sex, inter-faith, secular, Bhuddist, etc. She’d be happy to talk to you about your ceremony, and how to make it unique and memorable. She’s done ceremonies that vary from 30 second “cover the legal requirements” to audience interactive comedies, and is quite happy to come and make your day… different and unique.
The important thing is that she cares about making this part of your day as enjoyable as possible, and the best reflection of the future you envision together. Her approach is highly consultative, and she will guide you with the content and procedure. Most importantly… she makes you feel comfortable during your ceremony, and understands it can be a very stressful and emotional part of your wedding day.

Not only does she deliver on her promises… on time, and with high quality results, but her work is art.One of the things I love about Rosetta is her work ethic… ‘good’ is not good enough. She is detail-oriented and always goes above and beyond to make sure that your memories of “the big day” are perfectly captured.
I absolutely love referring David Morris for bridal photography! He keeps it simple… in pricing structure and everything else. There are no surprises, no hidden costs… just great photos. You can even just get them on CD/DVD and make your own choices about printing/sharing with family and friends.David also works with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep – and organization that helps grieving parents by providing lasting memories of the baby they have lost. It’s an invaluable service, and a volunteer position that means a lot to David.David’s also fantastic at FUN SHOTS!!! See our post on his “enjoy-the-dress” shoots here
Scott Photography (Ottawa, ON)
Brian Scott and his lovely wife Karen came out one snowy day in Ottawa when The Brides’ Project did a travelling roadshow to the city, to offer our services to the many brides we have in the region. They volunteered their time to document one heckuva crazy and fun day, with dresses flying left and right!
I was personally very camera shy at the time, and absolutely amazed that I did not feel self-conscious with them snapping pics. In fact, they were so unobtrusive and lovely to have around, that we hardly noticed! Many brides from the day made similar comments… heck, we were all there with no makeup, brides were trying on dresses for the first time in many cases, and they made us all feel relaxed.
That takes talent, and most importantly… great social skills! To have those amazing pictures that every bride wants for her wedding, that sense of comfort and connection with your photographer(s) is a must.
